Beyond the Field - December 2026
This project is set to take place in December 2026 in Ablekuma Joma, Accra. The event will aims to leverage the power of soccer--a vital aspect of Ghanaian culture, to unite the community and create a lasting impact that transcends the game. At the heart of the initiative will be a local soccer tournament designed to engage underprivileged youth while emphasizing the significance of education, personal development, and opportunities beyond athletics. In addition to the tournament, the project will offer free meals for participating children and volunteers, fostering an environment where families and community members can come together and connect. The event will also include complimentary health screenings and medical services for the entire community for free, with healthcare professionals providing evaluations for malaria, typhoid, hepatitis B, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure. Beyond the tournament weekend, the initiative seeks to provide ongoing support for local students by assisting with school tuition, supplying uniforms and educational materials, and, when resources permit, offering food assistance throughout the academic semester. Through these efforts, "Beyond the Field" aspires to use soccer as a platform to enhance health, broaden educational access, and strengthen the future of the Ablekuma Joma community.
Bono East Presbyterian School Project - December 2026
Bono East is a centrally located, rural region in Ghana known for its vast vegetation and close-knit community. During the past two years of her service, a Peace Corps Volunteer named Mariah Walton identified an urgent need to prioritize education within the community. In collaboration with Mariah, Changing Lives GH is planning a project to renovate the Presbyterian Primary School in Bono East, primarily by improving the current water piping, electrical system, and computer lab. By improving educational infrastructure, we strive to meet water, sanitation, and hygiene needs, as well as the energy needs to power students’ studies. Additionally, while working in the schools, Mariah noticed a lack of motivation among students to attend classes and pursue higher education. With only 10-15% of the population in Ghana seeking education beyond high school (Ghana Statistical Service, 2021), it is imperative to find ways to encourage young people to turn their passions into meaningful careers. Thus, CLGH will create a system to connect Ghanaian professionals with mentee students and host a career fair to demonstrate what is possible when you set goals. We hope this initiative will be a sustainable way to motivate future generations of students in Bono East.
